- Jackdaw gasfield, 150 miles east of Aberdeen, has been approved to produce in time for winter, expected to deliver 6% of UK North Sea gas production at peak over an 11-year field life.
- Prime Minister Andy Burnham framed the central question as where Britain's oil and gas should come from, noting oil and gas still provided 75% of UK energy in 2025 with about 43% of overall energy imported last year.
- Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh insisted the government's commitment to net zero by 2050 remains intact, announcing a new "energy wealth fund" to reinvest oil and gas revenues into renewable and low-carbon projects.
- LNG imports were 20% of UK gas imports last year, mostly from the US, with the column arguing domestic North Sea gas avoids the extra emissions from chilling fuel to -160C for shipment and regasifying it.
- The Langeled pipeline from Norway carries 40% of UK gas consumption and is described as a security vulnerability, with Norway having scrapped a planned electricity cable to Scotland in 2023.
- Rosebank, also near Shetland, is a trickier political proposition because it is mostly oil, though UK refining capacity has fallen to four plants from nine at the turn of the century, meaning its output would largely return as refined fuel via Rotterdam.
- Electrification remains nascent, with fewer than 2% of UK households having heat pumps (per lobby group Electrify Britain) and nearly 95% of vehicles on the road still running on petrol and diesel.
Why it matters: The approval reverses the previous government's approach of maximising fossil fuel imports, with the new "energy wealth fund" recycling oil and gas revenues into renewables. But Jackdaw is only 6% of North Sea output, and 95% of UK vehicles still burn petrol and diesel — so the real transition test remains the pace of electrification, not the pace of new field approvals.
