- El Gouna Film Festival revealed the first 10 titles of its ninth edition, running Oct. 15-23 in the Red Sea resort town of El Gouna, Egypt, with further additions expected in coming weeks.
- Hamaguchi Ryusuke's "All of a Sudden" — a French-Japanese-German-Belgian co-production starring Virginie Efira and Okamoto Tao — joins the lineup after winning a shared best actress prize at Cannes.
- Pawel Pawlikowski's "Fatherland" won a shared best director prize at Cannes; Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler star as Erika and Thomas Mann on a post-war European road trip in the German-Polish-Italian-French production.
- İlker Çatak's "Yellow Letters" — a Golden Bear winner at the Berlinale — joins alongside Markus Schleinzer's "Rose," Austria's submission for the 2027 Oscars, for which Sandra Hüller took a Silver Bear.
- "American Doctor" by Poh Si Teng follows three American doctors entering Gaza to save lives and expose the truth; the documentary won the Amnesty International Award and Peter Wintonick Audience Award at Thessaloniki after premiering at Sundance.
- "Who Killed Alex Odeh?" revisits the unsolved 1980s bombing that killed Palestinian American community leader Alex Odeh, winning the Sundance Jury Award for Journalistic Excellence.
- El Gouna artistic director Andrew Mohsen said the selections connect "through family, identity, and the quiet acts of courage it takes to hold onto both or to pursue the truth."
Why it matters: By snapping up Cannes competition titles from Pawlikowski and Hamaguchi plus the Berlinale's Golden Bear from Çatak, El Gouna positions itself as a key Middle East showcase for auteur festival-circuit films — while also slotting in two politically charged documentaries, including Poh Si Teng's Gaza-set "American Doctor" and the Alex Odeh reinvestigation, that bring current geopolitical realities into the Egyptian festival's program.
