North East Gets Fewest Green Flag Awards

- The North East received 57 Green Flag Awards, the fewest of any English region, compared with 90 for second-lowest Yorkshire and more than 120 for most other regions.
- The North West topped the country with 217 awards, two more than Greater London, as the scheme marked its 30th anniversary by handing out a record-breaking total of awards nationwide.
- Northumberland County Council led the region with 14 awards across sites including Alexandra Park, Druridge Bay Country Park, Hexham Parks, and Bolam Lake Country Park.
- Durham County Council confirmed it had not put its parks forward for Green Flags in recent years, saying it had "chosen to prioritise putting our resources towards the upkeep of the sites" instead.
- Newcastle City Council said it selects only certain sites each year due to the cost of applications and is separately investing £1.4 million in improvements to parks and green spaces across the city.
- Keep Tidy Britain, which manages the scheme, said it is "up to individual local authorities and other land managers whether they apply," noting that some NE councils that did apply — Gateshead, Newcastle, Darlington — had all their submissions approved.
Why it matters: The 160-award gap between the North East and the North West reveals a sharp regional split, but several North East councils' own statements suggest the low count reflects administrative choices as much as park quality — Durham and Newcastle both declined to apply for many of their sites, while every site they did submit succeeded.
