- CNBC surveyed 1,000 registered voters from Oct. 14 to Oct. 18 in its All-America Economic Survey; Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies conducted the polling.
- Democrats said they feared Trump would operate beyond constitutional power under continued Republican control: 74% said so, compared with 45% of independents and 44% of all respondents.
- Republicans’ concern centered in part on Democratic Socialists of America policies: 54% feared their implementation, compared with 22% of independents and 28% of all respondents.
- Price concerns cut across party control: 22% of all voters worried Democrats would fail to bring prices down, while 24% worried prices would not come down if Republicans retained the House and Senate.
- Separate issue questions showed affordability ranking highly across the political spectrum; Democrats and independents also listed government corruption, while Republicans listed immigration and border security. Respondents could choose up to two party-control concerns, which did not necessarily reflect their top electoral priorities.
- Alex Jacquez linked the fears to campaign advertising: Republican attack ads tied Democrats to the DSA and cultural issues, while Democratic campaigns hammered Trump’s alleged corruption, even as he said the election remained first and foremost about the economy.
- Lucas Holtz warned Democrats that adopting Democratic Socialists of America policies could squander projected gains in heavily Republican areas, while he urged them not to lose Latino and working-class inroads they are trying to build.
Why it matters: Affordability is the shared voter priority even as the parties trade fear-based messages: 22% worry Democrats will not lower prices, and 24% worry prices will not fall under continued Republican control. Both congressional outcomes therefore face the same economic test, while 74% of Democrats separately fear Trump exceeding constitutional power.
