iOS 27 Wallet Adds AI Bill Splitting, Pass Scanner

- Apple upgraded the Wallet app in iOS 27 with seven new features aimed at replacing the physical wallet, including pass upgrades, AI bill splitting, and a new "Create a Pass" scanner.
- Create a Pass uses Visual Intelligence to scan a physical card, ticket, or membership via barcode or QR code and generate a digital pass with templates for Standard, Membership, and Event categories, 12 background colors or 7 category-specific textures.
- Pass upgrades add a bolder "Poster Generic" card style for memberships, gift cards, loyalty cards, and rewards cards, support up to two tappable actions per pass, and add four new barcode types: EAN-13, Code 39, Codabar, and ITF.
- AI bill splitting uses Apple Intelligence to scan a receipt, let each person select what they consumed, and automatically calculate tax and tip, with payments routed through Apple Cash — a U.S.-only feature.
- Insights expands the earlier Connected Accounts feature to monitor spending, recurring transactions, and account balances, with support already implemented by several UK banks.
- Order tracking is expanding from the U.S. and UK to Australia and Canada in iOS 27, and a new Tap to Share feature lets customers connect to a participating merchant's iPhone for quicker digital checkout.
- Visual Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, while most other Wallet upgrades work across all supported iPhones; Apple is also releasing a Pass Designer Mac app for developers.
Why it matters: Apple is steadily absorbing the physical wallet's remaining functions — gift cards, hotel keys, receipts, even bill-splitting math — into the iPhone, but the AI bill splitter is gated to U.S. Apple Cash and Visual Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, so the most novel features reach a narrower audience than the headline suggests.
