- Russell Crowe premiered his concert documentary "What Love Builds" about his band Indoor Garden Party Out of Competition at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, capping a 15-year passion project exploring his life as a musician.
- Crowe, 62, said he was "totally happy" with where his career stands and pointed to upcoming credits Highlander, The Last Druid, and Unabomber as evidence of continued momentum rather than legacy mode.
- Crowe attributed his career freedom to having "mismanaged" his relationship with Hollywood "always to my benefit," noting it took "a long time" for the industry to realize he is not American and is "not driven by the same things" as U.S. peers.
- Crowe tied his longevity to a "pure perspective" on project selection, saying he needs to know why he's waking at 4:30 a.m. for a film set and feels sorry for actors who show up without that conviction.
- Crowe said the documentary is his attempt to answer the question he gets asked most — the difference between music and acting — which he described as "completely intertwined" and rooted in the same creative source.
Why it matters: At 62 with three films already on his slate, Crowe is using the Venice press cycle to argue his sustained output is a function of principled detachment from Hollywood, not luck — a stance that gives him leverage as an international star who does not need the studio system to keep working.
