- Cynthia Erivo joined the cast of Universal’s “Snoop” and will portray Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur.
- Afeni Shakur was born Alice Faye Williams in North Carolina in 1947, moved to the Bronx at age 11, joined the Black Panther Party after hearing Bobby Seale speak in 1968, and married fellow member Lumumba Shakur.
- Jonathan Daviss leads the cast of “Snoop,” joined by Myles Bullock Be as Dr. Dre, Camron Jones as Tupac Shakur, Lauren London as Beverly Tate and Algee Smith as Warren G.
- Craig Brewer is directing “Snoop” from his rewrite of Joe Robert Cole’s original script, with Universal dated the film for theatrical release on Aug. 6, 2027.
- Snoop Dogg is producing “Snoop,” which will incorporate music from his catalog, alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.
- Death Row Pictures has an overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, and “Snoop” is the first project under that agreement; Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret oversee production development for the studio.
Why it matters: Universal’s Aug. 6, 2027 “Snoop” now includes Erivo as Afeni Shakur, bringing a Black Panther Party member into its ensemble. Snoop Dogg’s producing role and the planned use of his catalog also connect the project to the first film under Death Row Pictures’ overall NBCUniversal deal.
