- CMS launches the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge pilot on July 1, letting adults 65+ on Medicare Part D pay $50 a month for Foundayo, Wegovy, or Zepbound — drugs that currently cost roughly $450 monthly out of pocket.
- Kathryn, a 66-year-old Denver retiree who dropped from 220 lbs to 133 lbs on Zepbound, said she now stretches her doses to make each order last longer than a month because of the cost.
- About 5 million US adults 65+ were already taking a GLP-1 drug as of fall 2025, per a KFF Health survey, and seniors were more likely than younger adults to stop the drugs because of cost.
- The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge requires Part D coverage, excludes patients with type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease, and limits eligibility to those with a BMI of 35+ or one of two other listed conditions.
- Dr. Annie Moore, an internist at CU Health in Denver, warned patients may wait 3-4 months before accessing the $50 price and that $600 a year remains too steep for seniors on fixed incomes.
- Dr. Christopher Weber, a Milwaukee internist who treats obesity, said clinics will struggle to process the prior-authorization workload if millions of new patients seek the drugs through the Bridge.
- Dorothea Vafiadis of the National Council on Aging said the 2027 expiration is a major concern, noting that "obesity is not a temporary problem" and that patients typically regain weight after stopping a GLP-1.
Why it matters: Medicare's $50/month GLP-1 Bridge targets the ~5 million seniors currently on these drugs and the millions more priced out at $450 monthly. The source documents provider concerns about a 3-4 month rollout lag, overwhelmed prior-authorization pipelines at clinics, and a 2027 sunset with no renewal plan — meaning the cost relief could be both uncertain and temporary for patients who need it most.
