- Darian Mensah said Cam Ward's path from Washington State transfer to the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft and Carson Beck's run to last season's national championship game were 'one of the two most important factors' in his decision to leave Duke for Miami.
- Mensah entered the transfer portal Jan. 16, days before Miami faced Indiana in the title game, then finalized his move after Duke settled a legal dispute over his multiyear NIL contract.
- Mensah threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and completed 66.8% of his passes in his lone Duke season, which ended with a surprise ACC championship.
- Carson Beck followed up Ward by throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns in his first Miami season, while Cam Ward led the FBS with 39 touchdown passes in 2024 — both under offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, who returns for a fourth year.
- Mensah acknowledged his ball security must improve after losing four fumbles at Duke, the same area of polish Ward and Beck addressed before boosting their NFL stock under Dawson.
- Miami coach Mario Cristobal called Ward an 'agent of change' for showing how transfer quarterbacks can elevate their draft position, and said the Hurricanes are 'beyond blessed' to add Mensah.
Why it matters: Miami has now turned two consecutive transfer quarterbacks into a No. 1 overall pick and a national championship game starter under Shannon Dawson, and Mensah — a 34-TD passer already in the NIL spotlight — is betting the third straight will end with a title rather than a runner-up finish.
