- Charades acquired international sales rights for 'Tangles,' Leah Nelson's Canadian animated feature debut, ahead of its world premiere as a Special Screening at Cannes before heading to the Annecy International Film Festival's main competition in June.
- The voice cast is led by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Seth Rogen, joined by Abbi Jacobson, Beanie Feldstein, Samira Wiley, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Bowen Yang, Pamela Adlon, and newcomer Fern Grandin.
- UTA Independent Film Group arranged financing alongside CAA Media Finance, and the two are co-repping North American and global sales for the film.
- 'Tangles' is adapted from Sarah Leavitt's graphic memoir 'Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother and Me,' following a woman who returns to her conservative hometown to care for her mother after the disease begins erasing her personality.
- Producers include Vicky Patel, Steve Barnett, and Alan Powell of Monarch Media, Rogen's Point Grey Pictures team, Lauren Miller Rogen's LYLAS Pictures, and Louis-Dreyfus, with Nelson, Ross Murray, and Teresa Toews producing through Giant Ant Films.
- Several producers are Alzheimer's activists with personal ties to the disease: Patel's late father was diagnosed in 2003, while Miller Rogen lost her grandmother, grandfather, and mother to Alzheimer's, prompting her and Rogen to found the nonprofit Hilarity for Charity.
- Charades arrives at Cannes with 10 films in Official Selection and parallel sections, including Palme d'Or contenders 'Parallel Tales' and 'A Man of his Time.'
Why it matters: The acquisition gives Nelson's debut a commercial launchpad via Cannes and Annecy's main competition, while the star-studded voice cast and deeply personal producer involvement (two of whom are leading Alzheimer's fundraisers) position the project as a prestige play that bridges animated arthouse cinema with the Alzheimer's advocacy space — a niche with documented fundraising and audience-engagement potential.
