- Wintermute USA LLC registered with the SEC and joined FINRA, securing broker-dealer status for its institutional operations
- The approval authorizes Wintermute to trade U.S. stocks and equity options, provide liquidity to exchanges and OTC counterparties, and act as an authorized participant for ETFs including crypto-linked funds
- Wintermute will operate as a proprietary-only trading firm and did not announce retail brokerage services
- The firm handles more than $10 billion in average daily trading volume across over 60 centralized and decentralized venues
- Wintermute plans to focus initially on crypto-linked markets, with intentions to scale into tokenized stocks pending regulatory approvals
- Wintermute joins Ripple, GSR, and Crypto.com as crypto firms that have built or acquired regulated U.S. securities businesses, including Ripple's $1.25 billion Hidden Road purchase and Crypto.com's 2024 acquisition of Watchdog Capital
Why it matters: Authorized participant status lets Wintermute directly create and redeem ETF blocks, meaning crypto-native firms with $10B+ in daily volume can now serve as the market-making backbone for crypto-linked funds without routing through traditional intermediaries. The firm is proprietary-only — no retail — so the immediate shift is plumbing-level, not user-facing.
