- DAP's central executive committee will put the question to over 4,000 delegates on Aug 16 via secret ballot, with the CEC deliberately declining to take a stance to respect delegate autonomy, according to Secretary-General Anthony Loke.
- The congress follows a string of electoral setbacks — coalition PH lost its two-term hold on Negeri Sembilan, DAP was wiped out in Sabah's November 2025 state election (losing all 8 seats it contested), and the party underperformed in Johor.
- With DAP holding 40 of Malaysia's 222 parliamentary seats — the most within Pakatan Harapan — analysts warned a Cabinet pullout would weaken the government and could trigger PM Anwar to call a snap GE16, which is not due until February 2028.
- Anthony Loke lost his Chennah seat in Negeri Sembilan and resigned as state DAP chief, but party figures including CEC member Kasthuri Patto said his leadership remains secure, calling him the "captain of the ship."
- Former DAP parliamentarian Charles Santiago predicted delegates would ultimately vote to stay in government, arguing departure would "create a huge vacuum and strip the Cabinet of its legitimacy," while DAP member Ong Kian Ming said "enough" delegates want to signal frustration over stalled reforms.
- DAP assemblyperson Steven Tiw argued the party should stay to honor its GE15 mandate and serve out the full term, noting "the people will be disappointed" if DAP leaves early.
Why it matters: DAP's 40 parliamentary seats make it the largest PH component, so a Cabinet pullout could force PM Anwar into a snap GE16 two years ahead of the February 2028 schedule. Whether delegates vote to stay or go, the depth of grassroots disillusionment over unfulfilled reforms signals a credibility problem PH must resolve before the next cycle.
