- Jalen Brunson vaulted onto the 2028 Olympic shortlist after winning Finals MVP with the Knicks, positioning him as a clutch late-game successor to the aging James-Curry-Durant core; he had previously changed his wedding date to play for Team USA at the 2023 World Cup.
- Scottie Barnes (Raptors) averaged 24.1 points, 8.6 assists and 6.1 rebounds across Toronto's seven-game playoff loss to Cleveland, and was the only NBA player to record more than 100 blocks and 100 steals during the regular season.
- Bam Adebayo (Heat) effectively secured his third Olympic roster spot by elimination: fellow 2024 centers Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis missed most of the season with injuries, while Chet Holmgren, Jalen Duren and Evan Mobley struggled in the playoffs, and the most productive postseason big men — Wembanyama, Towns, Hartenstein and Gobert — were all international players.
- LeBron James (76ers) is listed as a wild card after signing a two-year Philadelphia contract whose second year projects through June 2028 — one month before the LA Games — despite telling his "Mind the Game" podcast in November that he would watch the 2028 tournament "from Cabo."
- Chet Holmgren (Thunder) saw his stock dip after averaging just 10.7 points on 51% shooting against the Spurs in the conference finals (down from 18.6 points on 60% in earlier rounds) and attempting only two shots in Game 7.
- Jalen Duren (Pistons) posted the largest playoff-to-regular-season scoring drop for an All-Star since 1969 — 9.3 fewer points per game on at least 10 games, per ESPN Research — removing him from the center picture after an All-NBA regular season.
- Donovan Mitchell (Cavaliers) reached the conference finals for the first time but struggled individually, leaving him clearly behind Brunson in the American guard pecking order for what is likely a one-spot allocation.
Why it matters: With James, Curry and Durant likely exiting after Paris 2024, Team USA's 2028 LA roster needs a new identity — and Brunson's Finals MVP has rewritten the guard pecking order while the best playoff centers turned out to be international players, leaving Adebayo as the default American anchor.
