Here’s how offshore wind helped New England beat record heat

- Offshore wind farms delivered hundreds of megawatts during New England's July heat wave, dropping oil's share of peak power supply to nearly 10% on July 2, 2026 (the hottest day) — down from nearly 15% on June 24, 2025, a decline of more than a gigawatt in oil-fueled generation.
- New England grid operators produced 42.2 gigawatt-hours of oil-fired power during the July 1-4 heat wave, down 37% from the June 23-25, 2025 stretch, with Grid Status analyst Tim Ennis crediting commissioned offshore turbines, hydropower from Canada, and rooftop solar for the drop.
- Vineyard Wind (806 MW, off Massachusetts) finished construction in March with 49 of its 62 turbines activated by early May, while Revolution Wind (704 MW, near Rhode Island) started sending power in March and is set to reach full commercial operations by H2 2026.
- South Fork Wind (132 MW, off New York) operated at nearly full capacity on July 2, sending electricity into Long Island's heat-stressed grid, according to Ørsted's Mikkel Mæhlisen.
- The Trump administration has repeatedly tried to block these projects — halting Revolution Wind construction in August 2025, pausing leases for all five large-scale offshore wind projects in December — and has now adopted a strategy of paying developers to abandon future projects using billions in taxpayer funds.
- When all five wind farms are fully operational, they will add nearly 6 GW of clean capacity to the East Coast grid, a milestone that comes after a federal judge overturned the Revolution Wind stop-work order in September.
Why it matters: New England ratepayers benefit from cheaper, cleaner power when offshore wind displaces costly oil peaker plants, but the Trump administration's new tactic of paying developers to abandon future projects using billions in taxpayer dollars means no new offshore wind will be built in the U.S. for years — even as data from the July heat wave shows the existing farms already enabled a 37% drop in oil-burn generation.
