Iran strike exposes China's South China Sea radar gap

- Iran reportedly struck and destroyed the US AN/TPY-2 radar at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, located roughly 800 km away — within the radar's stated 3,000 km range — yet the system failed to repel the incoming attack.
- The AN/TPY-2 is an X-band radar (typically a fire-control band) that can also perform long-range surveillance thanks to its large phased-array antenna, high transmit power, and advanced beamforming; only 13 have been built, each costing just under $500 million.

Why it matters: China has spent years layering sensors onto Spratly reefs but hasn't built the real-time networking that would let them function as one system — the same architectural flaw that let Iran destroy a $500 million US radar operating in isolation 800 km from the launch site. In a South China Sea fight, that seam is exactly where the US, its allies, and Southeast Asian claimants could attack Chinese targeting and command-and-control.
