- Tina Satter and Half Straddle will reunite with Vineyard Theatre for "PETRA," a reimagining of Fassbinder's "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant," their first collaboration at the venue since "Is This A Room" in 2019.
- "Is This A Room" transferred to Broadway in 2021 and was later adapted into the HBO feature film "Reality" starring Sydney Sweeney, which Satter also directed.
- "PETRA" is set to begin performances in February 2027 and follows celebrated fashion designer Petra's obsessive love for young model Karin, which causes her carefully constructed reality to unravel.
- Fassbinder's 1972 film is regarded as the filmmaker's masterpiece and holds a central place in the history of New German Cinema and queer cinema.
- Vineyard's 2026-2027 season also includes "Ms. Blakk For President" starring Wayne Brady, co-written by Tarell Alvin McCraney and Tina Landau and directed by Landau, with performances beginning October 15 and opening night November 1.
- Vineyard Artistic Director Sarah Stern called Satter "a singular and visionary theatre maker" and said she reimagines the source material's "quietly epic story of desire, loneliness, and the power struggles embedded in intimate relationships" in "absolutely riveting" ways.
Why it matters: This reunites Satter with Vineyard after her breakout trajectory from Off Broadway to Broadway to an HBO feature with Sydney Sweeney, placing her auteur stage voice back on a New York stage in February 2027.
