Carl Rinsch Gets 2.5 Years for $11M Netflix Scam

- Carl Rinsch was sentenced to 2½ years in prison by Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan federal court on Monday, roughly seven months after his fraud and money-laundering conviction.
- Keanu Reeves, who vouched for Rinsch and whose 2013 film 47 Ronin the director helmed, wrote to Judge Rakoff asking the sentence be "tempered with measures of leniency and mercy as well as justice," but the judge rejected that, finding Rinsch was "determined to lie."
- U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton's office at the SDNY had sought at least 60 months, noting guidelines allowed for "literally decades," while Clayton framed Monday's outcome as a "deterrent message: fraud will not be tolerated."

- Netflix was bilked out of $11 million earmarked for the sci-fi series White Horse/Conquest, which Rinsch never completed; instead he funneled the money into speculative stock options, cryptocurrency, and luxury goods for himself.
- Netflix had originally signed Rinsch to a $40 million-plus deal in 2018 via then-exec Cindy Holland, later wrote off more than $55 million in costs, and won a $12 million arbitration ruling against him in 2024—none of which has been repaid.
- Rinsch has been free on a $100,000 bond since his March 2025 DOJ indictment; his defense team, which argued he was now broke and should stay out of prison, declined to comment after sentencing.
Why it matters: Rinsch walked away with a 2½-year sentence—well short of the 60 months prosecutors sought and the multi-decade guideline range—because Rakoff weighed mental-health factors against the $11 million fraud. Netflix is effectively made whole on paper only: despite a 2024 arbitration win and Rinsch's ongoing legal obligation to repay, the broke filmmaker has returned nothing, and the streamer had no comment on Monday's sentence.
