- Frontier Climate announced a $915 million investment in carbon removal companies, bringing its collective commitment to $1.8 billion, per a June 17 release.
- Anthropic joined Frontier's buyers group the same month it filed confidentially for an IPO with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
- Frontier will use the new financing to concentrate supply-side purchasing on a narrower portfolio of companies with "high conviction" gigaton-scale potential, while ensuring each deal has a line of sight to long-term demand.
- Frontier's portfolio spans 53 projects with 1.8 million tons of contracted carbon removals and $698 million contracted overall, including 463,700 tons removed for $169.8 million since June 2025.
- Charm Industrial president and CFO Tim Thomson tied AI's "enormous power requirements" to the need for carbon removal, noting the process also mitigates particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions; Frontier has contracted 112,003 tons from Charm for $53 million.
- Frontier has completed due diligence on 500+ carbon removal companies and signed first commercial offtake deals for CDR pathways including enhanced rock weathering, biomass injection and waste-to-energy with carbon capture.
- Frontier identified surface mineralization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, biomass removal and storage, enhanced rock weathering, and direct air capture as pathways with annual gigaton-scale potential at $60 to $300 per ton.
Why it matters: Anthropic's entry expands the AI sector's footprint in the voluntary carbon removal market, joining existing corporate backers Google, Stripe and Shopify. Frontier is narrowing its supplier base to technologies with gigaton-scale potential, directing its $1.8 billion in total commitments toward a smaller set of high-conviction pathways priced at $60 to $300 per ton.
