- Newcastle signed 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for £23m (£20m plus £3m in bonuses) on a five-year contract
- Steur becomes Newcastle's third summer signing, following £42m winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and £18m goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims
- Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have departed for a combined £169m, while Bruno Guimaraes wants to join Arsenal — a near-total midfield turnover
- Steur featured 25 times for Ajax last season, including three Champions League appearances where he became the club's youngest-ever assist provider in the competition
- Ajax awarded Steur the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy for their brightest academy talent, joining past recipients Christian Eriksen, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart and Ryan Gravenberch
- Ajax and Steur disagreed over his role for next season, with the teenager placed on the list to play for their U21s before pushing through the move
- Newcastle are in advanced talks with Freiburg for Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, valued at £51m; the 20-year-old scored three goals and provided two assists at the World Cup
Why it matters: Newcastle have moved £169m of established midfield talent out the door while bringing in three replacements all aged 20 or under — a youth-led rebuild by the numbers. Steur's pedigree (Ajax's Nouri Trophy winner with Champions League minutes at 18) is the template: replace departed stars with high-ceiling academy products rather than proven names.
