- Steve Clarke resigned as Scotland head coach minutes after their World Cup exit, having signed a new four-year deal exactly one month earlier, telling the SFA he had always planned to step away if Scotland failed to progress past the group stages.
- Clarke departs as Scotland's longest-serving boss and the first to lead them to three major finals in seven years, including a first World Cup since 1998 and a first World Cup match win since 1990.
- Scottish FA CEO Ian Maxwell said "nothing is off the table" on nationality and cast the net wide after receiving applications within hours of Clarke's announcement, aided by new chief football officer Craig Mulholland; Scotland last appointed a foreign boss in 2002 (Berti Vogts).
- Ange Postecoglou, the out-of-work former Celtic and Australia boss, is the bookmakers' early favourite, with Everton manager David Moyes (one year left on his deal) also high in the running, alongside Millwall's Alex Neil and Falkirk's John McGlynn.
- Kris Boyd warned the salary expectations that candidates like Postecoglou and Moyes have grown accustomed to will hamper the SFA's plans, though Maxwell hopes to appoint someone "as soon as we can".
- Scotland return to action away to Slovenia on September 26 in League B of the Nations League, with Steven Naismith available as an interim option if no permanent successor is found in time.
- The squad needs significant renewal: 43-year-old Craig Gordon, Grant Hanley (34) and Kenny McLean (34) may have played their last major finals, while prospects Ben Gannon-Doak, Lennon Miller, Findlay Curtis, and Hearts' James Wilson are flagged as the next generation.
- Scotland were demoted from League A after a play-off defeat by Greece last year, and the new boss will target the UK and Ireland co-hosted Euros in 2028 and the World Cup four years later.
Why it matters: Scotland must replace their most successful-ever manager within roughly three months, with Nations League action resuming September 26. Boyd has flagged salary expectations of top candidates Postecoglou and Moyes as a barrier, and an aging squad featuring 43-year-old Craig Gordon forces the new boss to balance short-term results against a generational rebuild ahead of the 2028 Euros.
