Sundance Teases New Theaters in Boulder, Expanded Competition Slots as Industry Heads to Colorado for ‘Orientation’

- Sundance Film Festival will run January 21–31, 2027, in Boulder, Colorado, with all venues clustered within a 2-mile radius including the University of Colorado Boulder's Macky Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Boulder Theater, and a Cinemark Century multiplex
- Four central competition categories — U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, and World Cinema Documentary — will expand from 10 to 12 films each, while Premieres, NEXT, Midnight, Family Matinee, and other sections also grow
- New Frontier FLUX will return after a two-year pause, reactivating the festival's experimental program at the intersection of art, cinematic storytelling, and emerging technologies
- FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) will award prizes at Sundance for the first time, selecting winners for Best Debut Narrative and Best Debut Documentary within the World Cinema competitions
- World Cinema Grand Jury Prize winners in both Documentary and Dramatic categories will now automatically qualify for the Academy Awards' International Feature Film Category, per Academy acknowledgment
- At-home online screenings will run January 28–31, with press and industry access beginning January 27, and the 2027 jury and audience awards announced January 29
- Eugene Hernandez, festival director and head of public programming, has been hosting "industry orientations" in Boulder for agents, artists, and PR teams ahead of the move from Park City
