A swarm of stink bugs and a river of rats: why India’s flowering bamboo causes a crisis for humans

- Melocanna baccifera and Bambusa tulda bamboo began mass flowering across Mizoram's forests in late 2025, unleashing a 48-50 year cycle in which the resulting seeds fuel a rodent breeding surge before rats spill into farmland
- More than 5,300 farmers across Mizoram have been affected, with rice suffering the highest losses alongside maize, ginger, pumpkin and beans, according to the state agriculture department

- A similar 1958-60 famine in Mizoram was linked to the same bamboo phenomenon, and Prof Lalrinmawia of Mizoram University said long-term planning and preparedness have "remained inconsistent" across generations
