- John Leguizamo signed on as executive producer of "Cyclovia," announced at the Edinburgh Film Festival while his awards-season run for playing Eumaeus in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" continues.
- Finlay Pretsell, the BAFTA-winning director, is helming the feature doc shot across five regions of Colombia with the producing team behind "The Look of Silence," "A House Made of Splinters" and "Alis."
- Pretsell framed the project as exploring "Colombia's obsession with the bicycle," highlighting Medellín gravity bikers who descend dual carriageways at 100km/hour in and out of traffic.
- Leguizamo said Colombia's relationship with the bicycle is "unlike anywhere else on earth" and that he joined for the project's focus on "Latin excellence" and Latin content.
- Producer Sonja Henrici said Latin American documentaries are still made mostly for European festival audiences, and that Leguizamo "gives us a route to both" Bogotá and the Bronx.
- The international co-production has broadcaster commitments from SVT (Sweden) and YLE (Finland), UK and Colombian tax credits, and public funding from Screen Scotland, the Swedish Film Institute, Film i Väst, AVEK and the Finnish Film Foundation.
Why it matters: Producer Sonja Henrici put the gap on the record: Latin American documentaries are still made mostly for European festival audiences, and Leguizamo's involvement is positioned as the route to also play in Bogotá and the Bronx. The SVT/YLE-backed co-production now has an unusually explicit dual-audience ambition for the genre, and a named star with crossover pull into U.S. Hispanic markets.
