- Sheila Chepkirui pulled away from Kenyan compatriot and past champion Hellen Obiri over the final 150 meters to secure her second New York City Marathon title.
- Almgren, the reigning half-marathon world champion, won the men’s race in his 26.2-mile debut.
Why it matters: Chepkirui became a two-time New York City Marathon winner, adding another title to her record. Almgren added a full-marathon victory to his standing as half-marathon world champion, while Obiri took the direct competitive loss after being pulled away over the final 150 meters.
