- Manasse Kianga scored an injury-time winner for Slovan Bratislava in the third and final round of Champions League qualifying, three years after helping Rossington Main to promotion from the ninth tier while also turning out for Team Sport in the Rotherham Sunday Football League.
- Rossington Main manager Ben Hunter first trialled Kianga after the forward's brother Bobby briefly represented the Doncaster club, and Hunter later travelled to Bradford court to support Kianga's unsuccessful 2024 application for a permanent work permit.
- Thomas Rotherham College — whose alumni include Jamie Vardy — says Kianga was overlooked by several professional clubs and missed England schoolboy selection because he could not obtain a passport in time for the final squad.
- Ross Hannah, the 40-year-old former Bradford City and Grimsby Town striker still playing for Rossington, recalls that he and Kianga formed a partnership that "caused real problems for defenders," and remembers nights when Kianga got lifts to matches because he had no car.
- Slovan Bratislava, managed by five-time Ballon d'Or nominee Yaya Toure, opened their Champions League league phase away to Paris St-Germain and will also face Stuttgart, Roma and Inter Milan, with Kianga travelling to the Parc des Princes but missing out on the matchday squad.
- Kianga has two goals and two assists in Slovan Bratislava's opening three domestic matches this season and was reportedly promoted from the reserves due to an injury crisis.
Why it matters: A player the English professional system twice rejected — once at schoolboy trials, again at the work permit stage — has vaulted from the ninth tier of English football to a Champions League squad in three years, putting him in line for a debut against Stuttgart, Roma or Inter Milan.
