- FDA approved Trutakna, a new medicine from biotech Vera Therapeutics, on Tuesday for patients with a chronic autoimmune kidney disease.
- Trutakna was cleared to treat IgA nephropathy (IgAN), a condition caused by buildup of immune antibodies in the kidneys.
- IgA nephropathy leads to progressive loss of kidney function and can progress to organ failure requiring dialysis, according to STAT.
- Vera CEO Marshall Fordyce told STAT the company is "extremely excited to bring Trutakna to patients," in an interview conducted ahead of the approval.
Why it matters: IgA nephropathy patients gain a new FDA-approved treatment option for a disease that can progress to dialysis, and Vera Therapeutics secures a regulatory foothold in a competitive autoimmune kidney disease space where multiple drugmakers have been racing for approvals.
