Okta buys Permiso for ~$200M to secure AI agents

- Okta agreed Thursday to acquire AI identity security startup Permiso Security, with the deal valued at just under $200 million in an almost all-cash structure (per a TechCrunch source; Okta declined to comment on terms).
- The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of Okta's fiscal 2027, subject to customary closing conditions.
- Permiso, which emerged from stealth in 2022, developed cloud-environment threat detection and recently expanded its platform to monitor AI agents and other machine identities; in April it launched SandyClaw, a sandboxed tool that analyzes AI agent skills for malicious behavior before deployment.
- Permiso was co-founded by former FireEye executives Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin, and has raised about $29 million to date — including an $18.5 million Series A in April 2024 led by Altimeter Capital that valued the Palo Alto-based startup at roughly $80 million post-money.
- The deal extends Okta's push beyond login verification into continuous monitoring of what users, applications, and AI agents do once granted authorized access, intensifying competition to secure machine identities in enterprise environments.
Why it matters: The ~$200M price tags Permiso at roughly 2.5x its $80M post-money Series A valuation from April 2024, pricing in rapid revenue or capability expectations from a startup whose SandyClaw AI-agent analysis tooling only launched weeks ago. Okta, Altimeter, and competing identity vendors are now visibly racing to own the continuous-monitoring layer for non-human identities before a dominant platform emerges.
