- Okta agreed Thursday to acquire AI identity security startup Permiso Security for just under $200 million in an almost all-cash deal, expected to close in Q3 of its fiscal 2027; Okta declined to comment on deal specifics.
- Permiso emerged from stealth in 2022 and builds software that detects suspicious post-access activity in cloud environments; the startup recently expanded to monitor AI agents and machine identities, and in April launched SandyClaw, a sandboxed platform that analyzes AI agent skills for malicious behavior before deployment.
- Permiso co-founders Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin are former FireEye executives; the startup has raised about $29 million to date, including an $18.5 million Series A in April 2024 led by Altimeter Capital that valued the Palo Alto-based company at roughly $80 million post-money.
- Okta chief product officer Ely Kahn said Permiso will extend the company's identity security fabric with identity threat detection and response capabilities and an 'incredible threat research and security team.'
Why it matters: Okta is paying roughly 2.5x Permiso's last private valuation (~$80M post-money on its April 2024 Series A) in just over a year, pricing in a premium for AI-agent security talent and tooling as identity vendors reposition from login verification to continuous post-access monitoring.
