- Anthropic accused Alibaba of running the largest known distillation attack on Claude between April 22 and June 5, 2026, generating more than 28.8 million exchanges through almost 25,000 fraudulent accounts.
- Anthropic said the campaign was conducted by operators affiliated with Alibaba and its AI lab Alibaba Qwen; Alibaba did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
- Anthropic detailed the allegations in a June 10 letter to Senate Banking Committee chair Tim Scott and ranking member Elizabeth Warren ahead of a scheduled AI hearing, warning distillation would accelerate China's ability to match its Mythos Preview capabilities.
- Anthropic had previously flagged similar Chinese campaigns in February, targeting DeepSeek (150,000+ exchanges), Moonshot AI (3.4 million+), and Minimax (13 million+) — all far smaller than the alleged Alibaba operation.
- Alibaba was added to the Pentagon's Chinese military companies list earlier this month and is challenging the designation in court.
- The Commerce Department imposed restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models on June 12 — two days after the letter — over fears they could be deployed by military intelligence users in China, forcing Anthropic to disable global access.
Why it matters: The 28.8 million exchanges dwarf Anthropic's prior documented campaigns (DeepSeek at 150,000, Minimax at 13 million), making Alibaba's alleged operation by far the most aggressive on record. The timing is awkward for Anthropic: it urged senators to combat IP theft while, two days later, Commerce restricted Anthropic's own most advanced models from foreign access over national security concerns.
