- Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos have jointly controlled the AFC West for 16 straight seasons; the 5-1 Chiefs beat the 5-2 Broncos 31-10, and Sunday’s 4:25 p.m. ET rematch will determine whether Kansas City takes a 1½-game lead with the head-to-head tiebreaker or Denver takes a half-game lead.
- Bo Nix scored on a 62-yard run—the longest scoring run by a quarterback in Broncos history—but remains 26th in QBR (45.2), 30th in completion percentage over expectation (-4.1%), and 31st in air yards per attempt (5.9).
- Kenneth Walker III had 23 carries for 173 rushing yards in the Week 1 win, when Denver missed 19 tackles; the Broncos have since missed eight against Jacksonville and nine against the Chargers, while Mahomes says Kansas City will keep feeding the run.
- Chris Jones has only a half-sack this season, while George Karlaftis and rookie R Mason Thomas have one each, as opposing quarterbacks have repeatedly escaped Kansas City’s pressure.
- Rashee Rice is expected back after missing two games with a strained right hamstring, and tackle Jaylon Moore is expected to return from concussion protocol; without injured receiver Tyquan Thornton, Xavier Worthy has one reception beyond 20 yards and rookie Cyrus Allen is scheduled for more snaps.
- Pat Surtain II is expected to play Sunday after missing three games with an ankle injury, while safety Talanoa Hufanga’s status remains a question because of a right ankle injury; Denver has gone 7-0 in games Surtain missed over the past three seasons.
- Harrison Butker missed two field-goal attempts in last week’s loss and has missed 15 field goals and extra-point attempts since the start of last season, while Kansas City signed veteran kicker Justin Tucker to the practice squad Wednesday.
Why it matters: Kansas City’s win would create a 1½-game lead and the head-to-head tiebreaker before the Chiefs face the Bills, Rams, Bengals, 49ers and Patriots in a tougher second half. Denver’s slate then eases against the Raiders, Jets, Dolphins and Chargers, so Sunday also bears directly on its playoff positioning and division chances.
