- Alfa Watan, a Turkish-owned general cargo ship flying the flag of Togo, sank after being hit by drones roughly 70 miles off Byala in eastern Bulgaria; its crew is missing and a search operation is underway.
- The Able, a Palau-flagged grain ship hit nearby, had all 18 crew — 11 Turkish and 7 Indian nationals — rescued by a Bulgarian vessel, with two pulled from a fire on board.
- Bulgarian PM Rumen Radev condemned the strikes as "a flagrant violation of maritime law" but did not name the attacker, instead warning that the war in Ukraine is expanding its geographic reach and risks a global conflict.
- EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that the Black Sea situation is "increasingly concerning," calling attacks on commercial ships and innocent crews "unacceptable."
- The attacks involved air and sea drones at around 03:00 local time and came a day after President Zelensky accused Russia of striking a civilian corn vessel; a separate Tuesday strike near Odesa killed one crew member and injured seven on a Marshall Islands–flagged ship.
Why it matters: Civilian commercial shipping in the Black Sea — including grain transport through Bulgaria's roughly 29,000 sq km economic zone — is now a direct casualty of the Ukraine war, with 18 of 19 known crew saved but at least one ship's complement still missing. Bulgaria's PM publicly tied the attack to the war without naming Moscow, while the EU's top official publicly flagged the pattern, escalating diplomatic pressure even as the attacker remains officially unidentified.
