- Travis Kelce re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on a one-year, $12 million contract with two void years for salary cap purposes, structured so he can decide whether to retire by June 2027
- Patrick Mahomes tore both his ACL and LCL in his left knee on Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers; if he can't play Week 1, Justin Fields and 2026 seventh-round pick Garrett Nussmeier will compete to replace him
- In 2025, Kelce led the Chiefs with 76 catches, 851 receiving yards, and co-led with five receiving touchdowns at age 36, joining Tony Gonzalez as the only tight ends in NFL history with 800-plus receiving yards in a season at 36-or-older
- Kelce is the Chiefs' all-time leader in receptions (1,080), receiving yards (13,002), and receiving touchdowns (82), ranking third, third, and fifth respectively all-time among NFL tight ends
- Since Kansas City traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in 2022, Kelce accounts for 22.7% (3,996 yards) of all Chiefs receiving — more than double second-place Rashee Rice at 10.2% (1,797 yards)
- Head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy are expected to continue featuring Kelce heavily in 2026, given a receiving corps that lacks other reliable playmakers
Why it matters: Kelce has carried 22.7% of the Chiefs' receiving yards since 2022 — more than double the next-closest player — but that workload now hinges on whether Patrick Mahomes recovers in time from a torn ACL and LCL. If Kansas City opens 2026 with Justin Fields or a seventh-round rookie throwing to a 37-year-old Kelce, the projected encore looks far less certain than the 851-yard 2025 baseline.
