- Center for American Progress estimates 'Operation Epic Fury' has cost more than $5 billion as of March 2, including Trump's June attack on Iran, American-led strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen, regional buildup, and lost military equipment.
- Ben Freeman of the Quincy Institute says the $5B figure is an undercount — it excludes a $1.1 billion U.S. radar system in Qatar reportedly destroyed by Iran and the cost of missile interceptors — and projects the final tab will 'well above $10 billion.'
- Patriot missile intercepts alone run roughly $44 million per Iranian missile — about $4 million per missile, with up to 11 used to take down a single incoming projectile — and hundreds of Iranian missiles have already been intercepted.
- Institute for Policy Studies and the National Priorities Project estimate that operating two aircraft carrier groups, related naval support, and more than 200 military aircraft costs nearly $60 million per day.
- The Pentagon is reportedly preparing an emergency spending request of up to $50 billion to replace munitions and equipment lost in the conflict, echoing the Bush-era Overseas Contingency Operations 'slush fund' that allocated more than $2 trillion with reduced congressional oversight.
- Chris Preble of the Stimson Center told RS the Trump administration has 'an obligation to communicate to the American people what this war is costing,' calling its disregard for Congress 'nothing short of breathtaking.'
Why it matters: Every Patriot missile intercept costs roughly $4 million — and hundreds have already been fired — while the Pentagon readies a $50 billion emergency spending request that, like the Bush-era OCO fund, could bypass normal congressional appropriations. The CAP report warns the bill could amount to 'the cost of Medicaid for millions' as Americans already feel rising housing, energy, and health care costs at home.
