Nvidia: Rubin Data Center Cuts Water to Near Zero

- Nvidia unveiled its Rubin generation reference design for a fully liquid-cooled data center, claiming it has "eliminated massive amounts of power usage and pretty much all water usage."
- The design switches to 100% liquid cooling and runs AI servers as hot as 113°F (45°C), capturing heat directly at the chip through liquid loops that feed outdoor dry coolers able to reject heat across a wider range of ambient air temperatures.
- Josh Parker, Nvidia's head of sustainability, said the system takes water use "from roughly 2.6 million gallons per megawatt per year for conventional cooling-tower-based systems to near zero — up to a 100 percent reduction."
- Amazon similarly touted higher heat tolerances in a recent report as part of making its mostly air-cooled data centers more efficient.
- Nvidia's blog post does not address water and energy use during construction, the power generation requirements of the massive facilities, or the cost of building liquid-cooled versus air-cooled designs.
- Nvidia claims "every cloud provider and data center operator building for [Rubin] is making the transition" to the liquid-cooled reference design.
Why it matters: Nvidia's efficiency pitch lands as public opposition to AI data centers increasingly targets water and power consumption, but the blog skips construction-phase water use, power generation demands, and cost comparisons — leaving the most common critiques of new AI facilities unaddressed while the company asserts universal cloud-provider adoption.
