- INTERPOL's 2025/2026 Asia and South Pacific Cyberthreat Assessment Report documents a "dramatic increase" in cybercrime, with phishing emerging as the most widespread and financially damaging form — a third of countries in the region logged more than 10,000 phishing cases between January 2024 and March 2025.
- Ransomware attacks across the region surpassed 135,000 in 2024, with real estate, manufacturing, and financial services sectors bearing the brunt of incidents.
- Transnational organized crime syndicates in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines operate extensive scam centers staffed by forced labor, using deepfakes in "rominance baiting" scams that contributed to $37 billion in regional cybercrime losses, per INTERPOL.
- Neal Jetton, INTERPOL's Cybercrime Director, said cybercriminals are leveraging AI, ransomware-as-a-service models, and social engineering techniques "on an industrial scale."
- DDoS attacks surged 92% in 2024 compared to the previous year, while system intrusions accounted for approximately 80% of all data breaches in the region.
- Phishing click-through rates in Asia-Pacific reached 5.5 per 1,000 individuals monthly — nearly double the global average of 2.9 per 1,000.
- Over half of INTERPOL member countries in the region reported that cybercrime accounted for no less than 30% of all crimes recorded nationally.
Why it matters: With cybercrime now representing 30% or more of all recorded crime in over half the region's countries, and 135,000 ransomware attacks logged in 2024 alone, the financial exposure for businesses in real estate, manufacturing, and financial services is becoming systemic. INTERPOL's call for cross-border operational cooperation underscores that no single government can counter the industrialized forced-labor scam compounds operating from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
