- RioFilme is fielding three titles at the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (June 12–21): "Luiza's Desert" in the Golden Goblet main competition, "The Fabulous Time Machine" in the documentary sidebar, and "Heart of Darkness" in animation.
- Leonardo Edde, RioFilme's president, is using the trip to pitch Rio de Janeiro as a co-production hub and explicitly seek Chinese investment in the city — not merely access to Chinese audiences.
- Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere unveiled a new investment package at May's Rio2C: $30 million in 2026 and $43 million in 2027/28, directed at public policies, grants, and film/TV initiatives.
- Rio de Janeiro leads Brazil's domestic cinema market, averaging 71% of national audiences and 70% of box office revenue between 1995 and 2024, with the creative economy contributing 5.2% of state GDP.
- RioFilme invested roughly $54.5 million across more than 600 audiovisual projects between 2021 and Q1 2026, and Rio's rolling Cash Rebate Grant offers up to 35% back for productions that film primarily in the city.
- Recent major shoots in Rio include Netflix's "Man on Fire" starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, "Godzilla vs. Kong – The New Empire," and "Fast & Furious" entries 5 and 10.
Why it matters: RioFilme is leveraging Shanghai to reposition Rio from a production-services location into a co-production and IP-export hub, backed by $73 million in combined city investment through 2028 and rebates up to 35% — a concrete, dollar-staked play to capture Chinese capital and move up the global value chain.
