Gemini Preps Proactive Assistance, Retires Legacy Voices

- Google app 17.18 beta reveals a "Proactive Assistance" feature to "Get personalized suggestions at the right time," with setup asking users to pick apps such as Gmail and Calendar, plus permission to read "what's on your screen" and your notifications.
- Proactive Assistance processes user data in a "private, encrypted space on your device" and the strings explicitly state it will not be used for "generative AI model training or human review."
- At I/O 2025, Google previewed the concept with Gemini scanning Calendar for an upcoming test and pushing a notification linking to a generated practice quiz.
- "Your Day" — the existing proactive feed — has been renamed "Daily brief" and is "presumably one of the first manifestations of Proactive Assistance."
- Gemini's original voice lineup, now dubbed "Legacy voices," is being removed: Ursa, Nova, Vega, Pegasus, Orion, Eclipse, Capella, Lyra, Dipper, and Orbit are all on the way out to make room for new Gemini voices.
Why it matters: Google is wiring Gemini into the ambient layer of Android — notifications, screen state, Gmail, Calendar — to deliver suggestions without being asked, the assistant vision it sketched at I/O 2025. The simultaneous retirement of all ten launch voices signals a full voice overhaul is imminent, and the on-device, no-training data handling is Google's preemptive answer to the privacy questions a context-reading assistant inevitably raises.
