NASA Puts Water-Hunting Sensor on JAXA Lunar Rover

- NASA is providing its Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS) to the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission led by JAXA and ISRO, with the lunar rover planned to reach the Moon's South Pole no earlier than 2028
- NSS detects hydrogen up to three feet underground using helium-3 gas proportional counters that register dips in medium-energy neutrons bouncing out of lunar soil — hydrogen being the H in H₂O
- Rick Elphic, NSS lead at NASA's Ames Research Center, said there is "currently a gap in our understanding" of how lunar ice is distributed at scales from tens of centimeters to tens of kilometers
- The first NSS flew aboard Astrobotic's Peregrine lander in January 2024 and captured 10 days of deep-space neutron data even though that mission ended without touching down on the lunar surface
- Two more NSS instruments are slated for NASA's VIPER rover (part of the Artemis campaign) and Carnegie Mellon's moonRanger micro-rover under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services
- The instrument was co-developed by NASA Ames Research Center and the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, California
- NASA says locating ice deposits is the prerequisite for marking astronaut landing zones, where crews could produce breathable air and rocket fuel on the Moon rather than carrying everything from Earth
Why it matters: NASA needs ground-truth maps of South Pole ice before committing crewed Artemis landings, and LUPEX is the mission that will deliver them. With three more NSS-equipped rovers flying before LUPEX, the 2028 data set will directly shape which sites astronauts touch down at — and whether they can realistically produce air and fuel on-site instead of hauling it from Earth.
