- Greg Shapiro, producer of the original "Harold & Kumar" trilogy, confirmed at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival on Tuesday that a fourth film is on track with the key cast returning.
- John Cho and Kal Penn will reprise their roles, with Shapiro telling Variety that "everybody's back — the actors, the writers."
- Original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are set to direct the sequel and are co-writing the screenplay with Josh Heald, per Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
- Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald will produce through their Counterbalance Entertainment banner alongside Shapiro, with Mandate Pictures — which produced the original three films — also returning.
- Shapiro said they are "working on the screenplay right now" and "hopefully we should be shooting it soon," while cautioning that everything "has to come together in the right way."
- The franchise launched with 2004's "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," followed by 2008's "Escape from Guantanamo Bay" and 2011's "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas."
Why it matters: For fans of the stoner comedy franchise, this is the first on-the-record confirmation from an original producer that a fourth film is actively moving forward — not just rumored — with both original stars and the original writing team attached. The return of Mandate Pictures and Counterbalance Entertainment suggests the creative DNA of the 2004 original is preserved.
