Hundreds of Claude chats indexed by Google search

- Reddit users uncovered over 200 Claude conversations across at least 25 pages of Google search results — some from last year, others just weeks old — including chats with resumes, contact details, proprietary healthcare research, and an unpublished cloud-security blog draft referencing a corporate project
- Anthropic blocked search indexing of the shared chat links over the weekend, but many of the exposed conversations had already been saved and shared widely online by then
- Anthropic's position is that users control sharing: links are "not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves," and shared content — like any public web page — may be archived by third-party services
- The share feature's UI tells users "anyone with the link" may view a conversation, but never explicitly warns that those links can surface in Google and other search engine results
- OpenAI's ChatGPT faced an almost identical issue last year and ultimately changed the ease with which such logs were accessible, while Grok on Elon Musk's X saw hundreds of thousands of its own chat logs exposed through online search in the same period
- Google told the BBC it "does not control what pages are made public on the web" and that website owners decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed; Bing, Brave, and DuckDuckGo also surfaced the Claude logs but declined or did not respond to comment
Why it matters: The "anyone with the link" label created a real expectation gap — users sharing resumes, healthcare transcripts, and unpublished corporate work had no warning their links would land in Google results, and Anthropic quietly blocked indexing over a weekend without notifying the users whose sensitive content had already been cached and redistributed elsewhere.
