- War Child U.K. launched the 10th edition of its Secret 7″ record auction with 700 sleeves designed by world-renowned artists and tracks including John Lennon's "Out the Blue," The Last Dinner Party's "Let's Do It Again!," Glass Animals' "Take a Slice," Gabrielle's "Out of Reach," The Maccabees' "No Kind Words," Skin's "Purple" and Bastille's "Hope for the Future."
- Each record contains a mystery song printed on 7″ vinyl inside a sleeve inspired by the music, with both the track and the sleeve artist kept secret until the winning bidder receives the record.
- Sleeve designers include ceramist Clare Twomey MBE, Berlin Wall muralist Thierry Noir, multidisciplinary artists Murugiah and Joy Yamusangie, interior designer Ben Kelly, Maccabees frontman Orlando Weeks, the Connor Brothers (Mike Snelle and James Golding), former Suede member Justine Frischmann, Ken Nwadiogbu, Super Furry Animals collaborator Pete Fowler, and Cure cover designer Andy Vella.
- The Last Dinner Party's "Let's Do It Again!" was released as part of War Child's "Help(2)" compilation earlier this year, tying the auction directly to the charity's ongoing recorded-music fundraising.
- All auction proceeds go to War Child's work delivering mental health support, immediate aid, education and protection to children affected by conflict worldwide.
- The exhibition runs at London's 180 Studios through Aug. 30, with the online auction closing Sept. 2.
- Charlotte Nimmo, War Child's fundraising and engagement director, said the campaign shows "the powerful role that creativity can play in driving positive change, even in some of the most dangerous parts of the world."
Why it matters: By tying 700 one-of-a-kind artist sleeves to mystery tracks from acts as bankable as John Lennon and Glass Animals, War Child U.K. converts cultural prestige and collector curiosity into direct funding for its mental health, education and protection programs for conflict-affected children. The 10th-edition milestone signals sustained appetite for art-meets-activism charity mechanics in the U.K. market.
