- Universal Television is developing a series take on Natalie Baszile’s novel “Friends and Family,” with the television version currently titled “Good People.”
- Good People is set in Northern California and follows Babs, a successful self-made interior designer, and her old-money best friend Nora; an affair and a police confrontation involving Nora’s adopted Black son disrupt both families’ carefully constructed lives.
- Marissa Jo Cerar is attached to write and executive produce the adaptation; her credits include “13 Reasons Why” and “Black Cake.”
- Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood will executive produce through Undisputed Cinema, with Gina also attached to direct the pilot.
- Mary J. Blige is an executive producer through Blue Butterfly Productions, joining Debra Martin Chase of Martin Chase Productions and Baszile in the producing team.
- Natalie Baszile is also attached to executive produce, and if the project proceeds it would become her second series based on one of her books after “Queen Sugar,” which ran seven seasons on OWN.
Why it matters: For Baszile, this is a second potential series adaptation after “Queen Sugar” ran seven seasons. For Universal, the project has assembled a writer, pilot director and multiple executive producers around a Northern California drama, advancing “Friends and Family” into active development without confirming a series order.
