- Disney+ and Hulu greenlit a reboot of Ryan Murphy's musical dramedy 'Glee,' which originally ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015 across six seasons following show choir members from Lima, Ohio.
- 20th Television will produce the reboot; Murphy confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he'd just written a script with co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan and is in touch with roughly 10 original cast members, all of whom were 'enthusiastic.'
- Lea Michele told E! News she'd follow Murphy 'wherever he goes'; Chris Colfer told Bustle that returning is complicated by Naya Rivera's 2020 drowning death at age 33, saying fans might come after him 'with pitchforks and jazz hands' if he declined.
- The reboot's path is shadowed by three cast deaths: Cory Monteith (overdose in 2013, while the show was still airing), Mark Salling (suicide in 2018 after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography), and Rivera, who drowned saving her young son from a lake.
- The original series tackled sexuality, race, disability, and mental health — sometimes controversially — and its music catalog (including covers of 'Don't Stop Believin'' and 'Smooth Criminal') still averages 4.1 million monthly Spotify listeners.
- Casting for the reboot has not been announced; Variety notes it 'can safely be assumed that several of the original stars will return,' a presumption the cast quotes above only partially support.
Why it matters: The reboot hinges on whether 'several' original stars actually sign on — a soft presumption the article undermines with Colfer's candid hesitation about returning without Rivera and the unresolved weight of Monteith and Salling's deaths, which adds a PR risk Murphy didn't face with his other reboots. With 4.1 million monthly Spotify listeners, the music catalog remains a measurable commercial asset that Disney is now positioning for streaming alongside the original series.
