- Woody Harrelson is among the producers of a new feature-length documentary about Austin's Armadillo World Headquarters (AWHQ), currently in development, with Jeremy Plager and Ilya Bronchtein executive producing alongside him.
- Harrelson, a Texas native and Academy Award nominee, framed AWHQ as "where all kinds of worlds came together," telling Deadline the venue made people "feel like they belonged" in a way that's rare today.
- The film is directed and edited by David Brodie and produced by Angus Wall, Eve Kornblum, Kent Kubena, and Terry Leonard of MakeMake, plus Marcus Peterzell and Amy Slotnick of Passion Point Collective.
- Armadillo World Headquarters will be documented through a restored archive of more than 100 audio and video recordings, including Springsteen's first Texas tour and sets by Fats Domino, Waylon Jennings, and Charlie Daniels.
- The documentary traces how AWHQ grounded the "cosmic cowboy" movement, a cultural crossroads where outlaw country, rock, blues, and counterculture converged, helping cement Austin's identity as the Live Music Capital of the World.
- AWHQ closed in 1980 and was revived in 2024 as a purpose-driven brand that recently relaunched with Austin FC and a pop-up experience, while a separate short doc, Armadillo Man: The Trips of Jim Franklin, is already airing on PBS stations.
Why it matters: The documentary anchors a coordinated effort to reintroduce AWHQ's legacy to a new generation — paired with a 2024 brand revival, an Austin FC partnership, and a PBS short doc already in rotation. Harrelson's involvement gives the prestige feature celebrity reach that the grassroots brand relaunch alone couldn't generate, and the 100+ restored recordings give it archival weight the existing PBS short lacks.
