H5N1 Reaches Australia, Endemic Wildlife at Risk

- H5N1 bird flu was confirmed this week in three giant petrels and a brown skua found dead or sick on Australia's southern beaches, with two more suspect cases, completing its spread to every continent.
- Dr Jane Younger of the University of Tasmania joined a multinational expedition to South Georgia, where she documented hundreds of fur and elephant seal carcasses and giant petrels feasting on densely packed bodies; she said the smell was "overwhelming" and watched a dead female seal's pup still trying to suckle.
- Australia's Antarctic program team on Heard Island — 6,500km east of South Georgia — discovered 13,000 dead elephant seal pups alongside hundreds of dead seals, penguins, and other birds, with disease tests returning positive.
- Australia's endemic wildlife faces an outsized threat: roughly half the country's bird species and 87% of land-based mammals exist nowhere else on the planet, meaning any extinction is a global one.
- Government-commissioned risk analysis identified more than 150 bird species at "very high risk" of extinction or major population decline, plus more than 10 high-risk mammals including the Tasmanian devil, platypus, rakali, and Australian sea lion.
- University of Melbourne's Prof Brendan Wintle said the government should create captive populations of threatened species as "insurance policies" before the disease spreads, warning that funding for risk assessment and on-the-ground conservation response remains "quite poorly" resourced.
- UNSW ecologist Prof Richard Kingsford, who has logged 40 years and 38,000km-per-trip surveying waterbirds, reported a 70% decline since the 1980s and warned that an expected El Niño will push inland birds toward coasts where they'll encounter infected migrants.
Why it matters: Because roughly 87% of Australia's land mammals and half its birds are found nowhere else, an H5N1 outbreak in native wildlife could permanently erase species from the planet rather than just regionally — and risk analysis already lists 150+ bird species and 10+ mammals including the Tasmanian devil and platypus as highly vulnerable, while conservationists say captive breeding "insurance policies" remain underfunded.
