- Juneteenth is observed Friday, June 19, 2026, commemorating the day in 1865 when Union soldiers informed enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, of their freedom, and many Americans will have the day off.
- Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo will be closed Friday, and both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq stock markets will be closed for the holiday.
- Walmart, Costco, and Target will all operate during normal hours on Juneteenth, with Costco notably staying open even though it closes for other federal holidays.
- Major grocery chains staying open include Food Lion, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe's, Wegmans, and Whole Foods.
- FedEx and UPS will make deliveries and keep retail locations open, but all U.S. Postal Service locations will close and mail delivery will be suspended, resuming Saturday, June 20.
- Retailers and fast-food chains open include Apple, CVS, Dunkin', HomeGoods, IHOP, Kohl's, Lowe's, Macy's (with some extended hours), Marshalls, McDonald's, Petco, Nordstrom, Sierra, Starbucks, Taco Bell, and TJ Maxx.
Why it matters: With both NYSE and Nasdaq shuttered alongside major banks, anyone needing to execute trades, settle transactions, or access in-person banking must plan around a full Friday closure — while mail through USPS is paused until Saturday, creating a near-two-day gap for postal shipments.
