- Rory McIlroy returns to the FedExCup Playoffs at TPC Southwind in Memphis (August 13-16), targeting a record-extending fourth FedExCup title from 12th in the standings, having skipped last year's FedEx St Jude Championship.
- Only the top 50 in FedExCup standings advance to the BMW Championship (August 20-23), then the top 30 to the Tour Championship (August 27-30), where the winner takes $10m (£7.4m) and a five-year PGA Tour exemption — with the starting-strokes model axed in 2025 so all players now begin at even par.
- McIlroy has played just six events since defending his Masters title in April, and putting mentor Brad Faxon told Sky Sports the back-to-back green jacket winner has 'the right to cherry-pick' his schedule to manage the mental fatigue of constant spotlight.
- World No 1 Scottie Scheffler and FedEx St Jude Championship defending champion Justin Rose are also in the 69-man field at TPC Southwind, alongside McIlroy.
- Jackson Koivun, 21, has qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs in just five events as a professional, matching a record previously held by Tiger Woods, after winning the 3M Open on only his third start.
- Those who reach the BMW Championship lock in 2027 signature-event spots, while the 30 players who make the Tour Championship earn two-year PGA Tour exemptions plus spots at the Masters, U.S. Open and The Open.
- Past FedExCup champions include Tommy Fleetwood (2025), Scottie Scheffler (2024), Viktor Hovland (2023) and McIlroy himself in 2022, 2019 and 2016.
Why it matters: McIlroy sitting 12th means he needs a strong week at TPC Southwind just to stay inside the top-50 cut for the BMW Championship, let alone climb into the top 30 for the Tour Championship and its $10m payday — and with Scheffler and Rose in the field plus Koivun emerging as a Tiger-esque rookie, the path to a record fourth title is crowded.
