- Coinbase unveiled a product suite spanning stocks, crypto derivatives, AI tools, and consumer finance as part of its push to become an 'everything exchange,' including tokenized stocks backed one-for-one by underlying U.S. equities.
- Coinbase is launching options trading for both cryptocurrencies and equities and now allows customers to transfer stock portfolios from other brokerages into Coinbase Advanced to trade U.S. stocks, ETFs, and indexes alongside crypto.
- Coinbase rolled out pre-IPO perpetual futures providing exposure to private companies, starting with SpaceX (SPCX), which went public earlier this month, with contracts tied to OpenAI and Anthropic — both anticipated to go public later this year — expected to follow.
- Coinbase introduced Coinbase Advisor, described as one of the first SEC-registered AI-powered investment advisory tools, initially available to Coinbase One subscribers in the U.S., offering portfolio recommendations, tax-loss harvesting guidance, and market analysis.
- Coinbase is expanding into consumer finance with a travel portal offering 5% bitcoin rewards, a USDC-backed version of its Coinbase One credit card, and borrowing against staked Solana through integrations with Jito and Morpho.
- Coinbase is adding tools that let AI agents execute trades automatically within user-defined limits, alongside prediction market products including short-term crypto prediction contracts and bundled multi-forecast wagers.
- Coinbase's combined exchange volumes fell 3.45% to $4.41 trillion in May — the lowest since September 2024 — while RWA perpetual futures volumes rose 10.4% against the trend to a new all-time high.
Why it matters: Coinbase is now directly competing with brokerages, banks, and fintechs — not just crypto exchanges — via tokenized equities and an SEC-registered AI advisor. The May volume data explains the timing: overall volumes fell 3.45% to $4.41T (lowest since September 2024), with only RWA perpetual futures growing 10.4% to a new high, signaling where Coinbase sees its next growth runway.
