- Nvidia announced Personal AI Router (PAIR), a free open-source tool that discovers compatible PCs on a network and connects them to run local AI inference in parallel via tools like Ollama and LM Studio.
- PAIR supports Nvidia GeForce RTX 20-series cards and newer, RTX Pro GPUs, DGX Spark systems, and Apple M4 chips or newer, with beta availability today on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
- PAIR activates only when systems are idle, dynamically adapting as devices join or leave — including when a user starts a game on their desktop mid-job.
- Nvidia product manager Seth Schneider estimated a hypothetical household (RTX Spark laptop, DGX Spark desktop, RTX 5090 laptop, gaming PC, and MacBook Pro) holds about 165 teraflops of underutilized compute, calling it "a treasure trove of free tokens just sitting in homes today."
- PAIR pairs devices through a six-digit code and then secures the channel via mTLS (Mutual Transport Layer Security) for encrypted bidirectional communication.
- Perplexity Portable Computer, Hermes Agent, and OpenClaw will offer simplified local setup with Nvidia GPUs on Windows, letting users get local agents running in a few clicks.
Why it matters: Schneider pegged a single well-equipped household's idle compute at roughly 165 teraflops — enough to make local agentic AI feasible for anyone already owning an RTX gaming PC or recent M4 MacBook, potentially substituting paid cloud inference for hobbyist workflows and reinforcing Nvidia's positioning of RTX as the de facto local-AI platform.
