- VIFF's Institute for the Moving Image announced a partnership with Spain's Málaga Film Festival to launch an exchange between their emerging-talent programs — Málaga Talent and VIFF Catalyst — marking VIFF's first such international festival partnership.
- Diego Minor Martínez, a Mexico-born filmmaker now based in Vancouver, is the first Catalyst participant selected; he will travel to Spain for Málaga Talent early next year, while a participant from Málaga Talent's 2027 cohort will join Catalyst in Vancouver later that year.
- Málaga Talent targets filmmakers under 30 and runs in Spanish, whereas Catalyst has no age limit; the exchange covers flights, accommodation and meals to remove financial barriers for emerging filmmakers.
- VIFF Catalyst consists of 10 sessions of roughly three hours each covering production, grants, distribution, marketing and post-production, plus studio visits and full access to VIFF programming including the AMP Music Media Summit.
- Ana Belén Asfura, director of the Institute for the Moving Image, told Variety the partnership grew from her attendance at Málaga's Mafiz industry program this year and conversations with Mafiz director Annabelle Aramburu, adding that a delegation of Spanish producers may come to Vancouver next year.
- Asfura signaled she wants to expand future exchanges, naming Indigenous-focused programs in Norway or Brazil as potential partners, and framed the work as essential to serving increasingly multicultural global audiences.
Why it matters: For emerging filmmakers, the exchange eliminates the cost barrier (flights, accommodation, meals) that typically blocks international exposure at the earliest career stage. Catalyst and Málaga Talent are structurally different — one age-restricted, one not; one in Spanish, one not — meaning participants are gaining access to a genuinely different industry pipeline rather than a mirror of their home program.
